Poweredge R710 Memory Slots
The PowerEdge R710 Server takes advantage of Dell's system commonality; when IT managers learn one system, they have learned the logic required to manage Dell's next generation servers. The logical layout of components and power supply placement delivers a simple, straight forward installation and simplified redeployment in the future.

The motherboard supports up to 288GB of 1333MHz memory through 18 DIMM slots. Dell flagged an updated BIOS for the Dell R710 as “urgent” and is available to download on their website. SAS SSD SATA SSD, SAS, nearline SAS and SATA storage devices are compatible. I have an R710 that had all 18 slots filled with 4gb sticks. I bough 2 16gb sticks to start the upgrade process. So far I can’t seem to figure out how/where to place them to maximize usage. How many total memory slots to install memory? The Server has 12 (4 banks of 3) to install memory, already with 0MB standard memory installed. For best PowerEdge R710 (DDR3-1333MHz) (ECC) Server performance use the maximum amount of 24GB, fill all the slots with the max allowed memory per slot for your Server. What is the warranty on these. RE: Poweredge R710 Memory Upgrade Configuration I currently have 6 - 16GB chips in the server located in slots A1, A2, A3 & B1, B2, B3. I need to add either 2 or 6 more sticks of 16GB to this mix. If I do this how should I spread out the RAM for best performance.

Dell R710 Memory Configuration Chart
Hi, i believe the issue here is slot distribution. It appears that you had left the original installed memory in the same slots as they were installed previously. To run this configuration in 'Optimizer Mode' you would want to install all of your DIMMS in order of slot in matching pairs. So for example, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6; and then B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6 while also making sure you are matching pairs. So what spec you install in A1, you will match in B1. You are correct in thinking that the speed will clock down to due to the mixing of slower memory with faster speed memory, but installing the DIMMS in this manner should get rid of the error message you are seeing during the post process.
