Country singer Dolly Parton has launched a Canadian arm of her Imagination Library, a literacy charity that sends a book a month to children under age five.

'There must be Canadian children too who want and need a program like this one and so here I am, and I just couldn't be happier to be here,' Parton said at an appearance in Toronto on Tuesday to raise awareness for the campaign.

'And let's face it — children relate to me because I look like a big old cartoon!' said Parton, who dressed for the event in a red and cream sequined suit.

Parton's non-profit Dollywood Foundation gives thousands of books to American children through the program, which she initially set up to aid children in her home state of Tennessee.

The idea is that children get a new age-appropriate book each month until their fifth birthday, encouraging parents to read to them and introducing little ones to the world of literature.

Reading to pre-school children can help make them ready to read when they enter school.

'The Imagination Library is going so well that we just thought, heck, it's time to bring this to Canada too,' Parton said, after treating a group of pre-schoolers to her hit song, Nine to Five.

Communities have to sign up

Communities have to sign up for program, which will be conducted in Canada through a partnership with the Invest in Kids Foundation.

Four communities in Atlantic Canada — Dartmouth and Whycocomagh, N.S., Stephenville, N.L., and Woodstock, N.B. — are the first to sign up for the program here. Together they have with 600 newborns enrolled.

Communities who want to be involved have to find sponsors who can help cover the ongoing costs of buying and mailing the books.

Parton says the inspiration for her Imagination Library is The Little Engine That Could, because, she says, 'I'm a little engine that did, honey!'

Parton will remain in Ontario for three live concerts at Casino Rama in Orillia.

She also says she's writing the music for an upcoming Broadway show based on Nine to Five, the 1980 movie in which she co-starred with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.
